The life of an entrepreneur is filled with hard work and a drive for success that can lead to long hours at the office, and the habit of not knowing how to switch off. It is for these reasons that many Entrepreneurs suffer from burnout. We are after all human, and it is impossible for us find a balance that allows us to enjoy a life outside of work.
There’s been a rise in the amount of websites, films and other media portraying entrepreneurship as a never ending pursuit of success. ‘Sleep? What’s that? You don’t need sleep until you’re successful!’ This is of course ridiculous and a big contributor to businesses not taking off – their founders put themselves under too much pressure.
So how do we make sure that we learn to switch off, live a balanced life and avoid burnout? Here are some useful tips to achieve just that!
Stick To Daily Rituals
This is really helpful for making sure that you begin to allocate time for all the things you need. It’s a good idea to create 3 rituals, including:
A good morning ritual involves getting up at least an hour earlier than you need to; getting some light exercise, a good breakfast, some headspace and a little bit of reading. This sets you up for the day at a pace that hasn’t started with rushing.
Consider breaking your day down into the following; spend the first 2 hours of the day doing your most successful task, the most important for the company – the 20% that brings in the 80%! Only then look at and answer your emails. Grab a coffee or mid morning snack and spend up until lunchtime doing less important tasks. After lunch, set up a to do list of the non-essential tasks to do in the afternoon, make any phone calls you have to make and then the last thing you do before the end of the day is check and respond to your emails.
This routine lets you focus on the most important task when you’re working in the most productive state, you don’t waste time continually checking emails, you are set up for your work tomorrow and by doing this and a final check on your emails, you’re allowing yourself to easily switch off before heading home.
Your evening ritual is just as important as the other two as it will link up directly with how you perform the next day. Go for a long walk, grab a healthy dinner. Socialise with your friends and spend at least 1 hour relaxing and not doing anything strenuous. Allow your mind and body to completely calm. Meditation is good for this and avoiding anything work related in this hour is essential! Make sure you’re in bed in time to get a good 7-9 hours sleep.
By keeping to these rituals and routines you are allowing yourself equal amounts of time to work and to recuperate. Our minds need the down time to cope with the strain of running a business. It’s not easy but it’s what we do, and we want to make sure we’re in the best shape possible to succeed!
