Intelligent People are More Distracted At Work
Do you find it impossible to concentrate in work? Is every little noise a distraction? Does your mind race between all of the different things you should be working on? Well there could be a very good reason for that according to new research…
A new study, carried out by Steelcase – workplace solutions, claims that intelligent people are more easily distracted at work. This is due to the fact that they find it hard to focus the mind with all of the amazing ideas that are running through their brains, says the research.
Those with higher IQ’s find it difficult to prioritise what ideas need to be worked on first, with these distractions leading a number of subjects to feel an, “inadequacy and inability to deal with the workload as a whole”, according to psychiatrist Dr Ned Hallowell.
He goes on to add that the brightest brains can end up falling short of their own expectations and also of what their boss expects. These makes the distractions and inability to focus worse as feeling of not working to their full potential are also combined into the mix.
“Employers are always on the lookout for the brightest people available, however the difficulty to withstand multiple tasks and distractions in the office affects smart people in the same way as everyone else, if not more,” explained Bostjan Ljubic who is vice president of Steelcase – the company that published the research.
“The ways in which we work are changing more rapidly than ever before and the brain is being subjected to stresses and distractions which can lead to overload and statistics show that distractions in the workplace are on the rise.” he adds.
The study consisted of 10,000 workers from 17 different countries and also highlighted the fact that increased use of technology in the workplace has made it more difficult for staff to stay focused, with the average office worker distracted once every three minutes!
