Sometimes it can be difficult to study, especially at the beginning of the course. We tell ourselves that we have plenty of time to start. And, while this may be true, there are also huge benefits of studying everyday. It can have a positive effect on your mentality, reduce stress and set you up for success. 

In this post, we are going to show you the benefits of studying everyday so you can make a start and reap the rewards of effective study. Even if your course started awhile ago that’s ok, just start today. Do a little bit. Gradually build on that. It’s not always about how long you study it’s about how effectively you studied. 1) Good for your brain

Studying everyday is really good for the brain and memory. In a study, neurologists found that learning promotes brain health and that mental stimulation could reduce the effects of ageing on our memory and the mind.

2) Habit building

By studying everyday, no matter how long or short, you are creating a habit. Consistency and self-discipline are key to building this habit. It may be difficult at the start but it will get easier and become something you just do without too much thought.

To begin pick a time each day that suits you best. Pick a place that suits you best. This may be in your home or local library, basically, anywhere you can study and learn distraction-free. Check out our post on “how to study effectively at home.

When you have found the place that works well for you, you can then experiment with which times suit you best. This may in the morning or evening, whatever works well for you. You can then block a few hours in the morning or night each day. Or maybe you’d like to do a few in the morning and night. 

How many hours should I study?

How many hours you should study really comes down to you and your course type. Usually, when you begin a course it will be outlined on the syllabus, or by your course leader, the recommended time you should dedicate to studying the course. 

So, this will vary greatly with regards to the type of course that you are doing. It will also depend on how well you want to do in the course. If you just want to pass you may not need to spend as much time as the person who wants to get top marks. 

Of course, it will also depend on how much time you have available to study. You are more than likely going to be balancing your studies with work and/or family life.  This is why we strongly recommend studying everyday from the start. It doesn’t have to be all night every night but even an hour a night could keep you on top of your course work and reduce the pressure and stress come exam time. 

But we must also encourage a healthy relationship between your studying and rest time. While we recommend the benefits of studying everyday, it is crucial to have some time for yourself and other life commitments to avoid burnout. This time is just as important as the study itself. Likewise, it is more important to have 20 minutes of good quality study than 3 or 4 hours where we are forcing our brains to do something that it just doesn’t want to do.

Effective study respects the fact that our mind and brain can only do so much. Therefore when studying, no matter for how long, schedule in some breaks. For example, study for 20 or 30 minutes and take a 15-minute break. Quality outweighs quantity!

Having a consistent daily study routine will make it much easier to study closer to the exams. You will have also by that time established good study habits and a routine that is working well for you. One of the major benefits of studying everyday, regardless of whether or not an exam is coming up, is its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. This is particularly true around exam time. Exams, as well as the sheer workload of a new course, can create a lot of stress for students.

An American College Health Association (2015) survey found that stress was a major part of life for the majority of students in the USA. It’s findings reported that 45% of American college students claimed to undergo “more than average stress,” while 33% of students reported “average stress” and 12.7% saying it is  “tremendous stress.” While 45% of United Kingdom students reported feeling stressed by their course. 

So, one way to combat this stress is to begin studying early and everyday. It will help you plan and prepare for upcoming exams and projects in advance while staying on top of your current work. 

4) Allows more revision time

By studying everyday you’re creating more opportunities for yourself to go over that course work. This means by exam time you are doing less learning and more revising which will be much easier. 

It also puts you in a better position to score better in your exam and increases your chances of passing.

5) More sleep around exam time

You’re also setting yourself up to be in a much healthier position at exam time. Because you have been studying everyday you will be under less pressure come exam time. This means you’re less likely to be in a position where you have to stay up all night cramming for exams. 

Therefore, you can get plenty of rest and sleep and have a nice fresh and clear mind going into your exam.

6) Creates a positive frame of mind

Studying everyday, even just a little bit, puts us in a better, more positive frame of mind. This, in turn, impacts how we learn and helps with anxiety and stress levelling. It will leave us feeling like we have accomplished something and of course that we can accomplish even more. We feel good after studying and this good feeling then snowballs into other areas of our life too.

The benefits of studying everyday are plentiful, but it is important to maintain a healthy balance with other areas of your life. Make sure to schedule in some rest days, and days where you spend time with your family and friends. Studying everyday is great for the mind but the last thing you need is to burn yourself out. So remember to take some much needed downtime too.
