1) How Has This Position Evolved?

This is a great question to ask to get a better understanding of the role, what new duties have been added or what’s been taken away. It shows you have an interest in the role and helps you to understand where it may be headed in the future too.

2) What Soft Skills Do You Like to See in Potential Hires?

Hard Skills are primarily what the hiring managers are looking for in particular roles, but there will always be soft skills that are of particular interest in a company. Understanding what these are, tells you more about what the company values and also lets you address any areas if you receive a job offer.

3) How Would You Describe The Culture Here?

Understanding a company’s culture gives you a deep understanding of what it’ll be like to work there. Also, managers are often very proud of the culture in place in the company and will like explaining everything that they’ve put in place to create a positive working atmosphere.

4) What’s Your Favourite Thing About Working For This company?

This is a personal one and again, a little bit different for the hiring managers to answer. If you’re being interviewed by more than one person it can create a lively discussion that will give you great insight into the company. It also shows that you not only have an interest in the company but in the people working there as well.

5) How Have People In This Position Before Me, Contributed to its Success?

This is a great question if the role has been around for a while. If it hasn’t then you can alter the question slightly to “What’s the best way I will be able to contribute success to this role?”. It lets you know what the company counts as success and/or lets you know how well people have done in the role before you.

6) Can You Describe the Evaluation Processes?

Good companies should have continual performance management systems in place that allow you to monitor how you’re doing and how the company feels you’re doing. It identifies if you need any extra support and gives you an idea of how successful you’re being. Understanding the process that they have in place lets you know how much support you can expect in the role.

7) What is the Advancement Path for this Position?

You don’t want to be stuck in the same position for years with no idea of where you’re going or when it’s going to be. A good company will know the paths of advancement that exist and be able to tell you how people have progressed before.

8) What Are Some of the Problems that the Company is Facing at the Moment?

This shows a real interest in the company itself and not just the role you’re applying for. It’s a good idea to do some research here so you have an idea of what they might come back with and turn this into a conversation. It shows you know your stuff and are already thinking of ways in which the company can improve.

9) Why Did the Person in this Role Previously Leave?

If this is an existing role then you might be curious as to why the person left the role. This can be a bit uncomfortable to ask but it shouldn’t be. It’s perfectly fine to see if the person in the role advanced to a higher position with the same company or decided to move on.

10) Where Are you Aiming to See the Company in 3 Years?

This shows your interest in the success of the company and shows you’re thinking of this role long term. It’s great to hear what upcoming projects the company might have and they might be moving into an area where you have skills to offer.
