There comes a point in time for many of us where we ask “Why can’t I study anymore?” and at this point, we lose faith. But should we? Does this mean we have fallen out of love with our chosen course or have we burnt ourselves out?

But don’t stress just yet! Things are never so clear cut. Chances are you just need to take some time for you and unwind. After a period of rest, that motivation to complete your chosen studies will very likely come rushing back. Read on to hear some useful tip to help you get through your study slump and back on track in no time. 

Why can’t I study anymore?

Studying requires a lot of discipline and motivation. Very few people love studying and, to be honest, studying something you don’t particularly like is going to increase the chances you won’t enjoy studying.  Below we have compiled some reasons as to why many students ‘hit the wall’ when they are studying.

1) Not socialising enough with friends

One of the keys to successful and effective studying is to maintain a healthy balance between study, work and family life. When these get out of whack, we can find ourselves asking “why can’t I study anymore?”

It sounds simple but it’s actually quite hard to maintain in reality. There’s plenty of times when course work seems hectic so we dedicate more of our time to it and less time to socializing with our friends. Sometimes this is ok – especially around exam time. However, we need to ensure when the exams are over, we take some downtime and put the books away for a while. 

So, the bottom line is to ensure that as hard as you study, you also take time to unwind and spend quality time with family and friends. Your course is important, but in order for you to do well, you need to stay motivated

2) not Rewarding yourself

This may seem like a little point, but it can bring significant results. Be sure to reward yourself. There’s no point in doing well if you’re not going to take a minute to be proud of your achievements. So, reward yourself for milestones, exam results, or after handing in an assignment. 

Whatever you want. Just set up some goals. The more the better. Rewards no matter how big or small are a great way to keep yourself motivated. 

3) Why are you doing your chosen course?

This one is quite important. Knowing why you picked the course you did is quite important. This helps you stay motivated when the going gets tough. And plays an important role in the question “why can’t I study anymore?”

4) Is this your passion?

This boils down to whether or not you actually enjoy the course you are doing. Are you doing it because it’s your passion? Do you love reading about the topic your course is based on? Or did you chose an accounting degree because you were told you’d be guaranteed a job with a good income?

If it’s the latter it can be hard to keep that motivation to study going. Not saying it’s impossible, as many people do it, but some people find it difficult to study something that’s not their passion, or something they are not deeply interested. It can be hard to use career progression or money as a motivator to study. 

Everybody is different. Just because your friends or colleagues are doing a particular course and doing well in that course, doesn’t mean you should put pressure on yourself to do likewise. 

5) Is it just a bad day?

Ok, so it’s certainly not a big deal to have a day here and there where you just don’t feel like studying. This is perfectly fine. Heck, I used to have a couple of days in a row where the thoughts of studying brought me down. But this is perfectly normal. 

However, if the thoughts of studying bring about that same feeling every single time you go to study, then it’s time to ask some deeper questions. 

6) Is it just procrastination?

As I said above, it’s perfectly normal not to always want to study. In some instances, we use this feeling to procrastinate or put off doing the actual work that needs to be done. 

However, it’s important to remember that nearly everyone would rather be doing something else than studying. If you find yourself procrastinating, try to get your study down earlier in the day and reward yourself with an activity you’re looking forward to later.

7) Fear of failure?

The fear of failure is a huge one. It’s tricky and sometimes we don’t even notice that we are doing it. It’s like we have such a deep fear of failing that we actually end up self-sabotaging ourselves by not studying.

Remember, failing or making mistakes is part of the learning process. You need to learn what NOT TO DO as much as what TO DO. This isn’t just a rule for studying, this is the case in many areas of life. It’s also a shared experience, so don’t be afraid to start in case it might not work. That can happen, but if you give yourself plenty of time, you’ll end up getting the result you’re looking for in the end.

8) Too much pressure?

Sometimes when we put too much pressure on ourselves, we end up in a negative place. Here we begin with a lot of negative thoughts and comments in our head simply because we have set unrealistic expectations. 

This usually stems from our childhood and how we were raised. If we are used to being surround by extremely high standards and high expectations we too are going to then set them for ourselves when we pursue courses and other undertakings in the future. 

So, to address this, take a look at the pressure you are placing on yourself. Ask yourself are your goals and expectations realistic? Are they achievable given your lifestyle and time that you have available to complete the course?

9) Don’t compare yourself to others

Comparing yourself to others can cause you not to want to study. Everyone is different. You also don’t really understand another person’s motivation or circumstance to study.

You only know your own and that’s what you’ll use to study. So try not to compare yourself to other students as this will increase the amount of pressure and stress that you place on yourself and in turn will cause you to not want to study anymore. 

10) Depression

In some cases, the lack of desire to study can be a sign of depression. But the most important thing to establish here is that does your lack of motivation solely relate to study or does it relate to other areas of your life to?

If it relates to study then it’s more than likely your burnt out and need some downtime. So spend some time with friends and family. Relax and enjoy yourself and you’ll soon get your study motivation back. 

However, if your lack of desire extends to more activities than just studying such as other daily activities then it is a good idea to speak with a qualified health professional such as a doctor or a mental healthcare specialist.

11) Lack of concentration

Is your lack of desire not to study anymore due to a lack of concentration? Do you find yourself constantly looking around, not able to focus and constantly getting distracted?

12) Not eating right

This one may not seem that important, but the food we eat actually has a huge impact on how we feel. Make sure meals are well balanced and healthy. If your body is not getting all the nutrients and minerals that it needs to function you are more than likely going to feel sluggish and unmotivated.

Remember, when you find yourself asking “why can’t I study anymore?”, sometimes less is more.
